چکیده

The use of ABR service on Internet backbones has been recently proposed as a means to improve statistical multiplexing and to recover the bandwidth left over by VBR traac. While this approach permits far better utilization of ATM resources than it is possible otherwise with the CBR service, full link utilization is seldom achieved. In this paper we address the reasons why the ABR ow control cannot track the dynamic variations on the available bandwidth along backbone links and we propose an approach to improve resource utilization that relies on bandwidth overbooking. The proposed scheme avoids cell losses and unnecessary rate reductions.

Bandwidth Efficiency in Internet AVPNs*

The efficient utilization and management of bandwidth in broadband networks is of paramount importance since bandwidth costs are likely to dominate network operational costs, especially in the wide area scenario. However, relatively little attention has been given to this issue in developing the current schemes for the transport of Internet data traffic over ATM. In this paper we describe a ban...

New services have been deened to allow the Internet to address the demands of new multimedia applications. Meeting the Quality of Service requirements for these services involves implementing new features on routers and bandwidth management is a key aspect of this eeort. In this paper we compare the use of ABR versus CBR service to provide band-width and real time commitments to the multimedia ...

A Rate Based Back - pressureFlow Control for the

The Internet has traditionally relied on end-to-end congestion control performed at the transport layer by TCP. In this paper, we discuss the limitations of this approach to address the large number of ows and the large delay-bandwidth product scenarios typical of next generation Internets. We propose a link layer back-pressure ow control which can be applied to Inter-net backbones over ATM. Mo...

Constant-Time Dynamic ATM Bandwidth Scheduling for Guaranteed and Best Effort Services with Overbooking

In this paper, we present an analysis of an existing ratebased ABR scheduling algorithm described in [1], and propose an enhanced rate-based round robin (RBR) scheduling algorithm for ATM switches and end systems. One of the novel aspects of RBR is that the scheduler supports available bit rate (ABR) traffic as well as guaranteed bandwidth reservations. In addition, bandwidth overbooking is all...

Performance of TCP/IP over ATM over an ADSL

The performance of TCP/IP over ATM over an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) was investigated. Because the bandwidth of an ADSL link can vary over time due to changes in the link’s physical conditions, which degrades TCP performance, we performed simulations for various ATM traffic controls, including available bit rate (ABR) and generic flow control, used to handle variations in the AD...
